Universal Robots Introduces the New Gen 7 and UR g-Series Cobot Family

Universal Robots introduced Gen 7 – a new industrial automation solution that brings together next-generation collaborative robots, hardware, software, and connectivity into one comprehensive system – in September 2026 at IMTS in Chicago. At its core are the new g-Series cobots, the CB7 Core Controller, TP7 Core Teach Pendant, SP7 Smart Panel, and PolyScope X software platform. The components are designed to work as a unified system, making it easier to integrate sensors, cameras, PLC/MES systems, and AI applications.

Three New Cobots for Different Production Tasks

Gen 7 launches with three new models – the UR10g-1750, UR17g-1300, and UR18g-950. Their names now provide direct information about the models’ key specifications – payload capacity and working reach.

  • The UR10g-1750 offers a reach of 1,750 mm and an extended payload capacity of up to 10 kg, making it suitable for tasks that require a larger working space. The model reaches TCP speeds of up to 5 m/s.
  • The UR17g-1300 combines a 1,300 mm reach with an extended payload capacity of up to 17.5 kg and speeds of up to 5 m/s. This makes it well suited to dynamic applications where productivity and short cycle times are important.
  • The UR18g-950 is the highest-payload model among the three new g-Series cobots, offering a payload of up to 18 kg, a reach of 950 mm, and speeds of up to 4 m/s. This makes it a good choice for applications that require heavier loads to be moved within confined spaces.

New Connectivity for AI and Sensor Applications

One of the key changes introduced with Gen 7 is the new Tool Flange. Instead of requiring additional wiring to connect cameras, sensors, and end-of-arm tooling, the system integrates power, data, and I/O capabilities directly at the tool. The flange provides 1 Gb Ethernet, 24/48V power, and configurable I/O interfaces. This makes it easier to integrate a variety of end tools – particularly in applications that rely on high-speed data exchange. Gen 7 also features integrated force and torque sensing, impedance control, and real-time data exchange via RTDE. This allows the cobot to respond not only to the position of an object but also to its physical interaction with the robot, providing an important advantage in precision assembly, manipulation, and other force-sensitive operations.

Faster and More Convenient Robot Control

The new SP7 Smart Panel is designed to allow operators to control and configure the cobot directly at the point of operation. Attached to the flange, the panel features Freedrive functionality, LED indicators, and three configurable buttons that can launch Smart Skills in PolyScope X. This is particularly useful in high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environments, where frequent cobot setup and reconfiguration are part of everyday operations. Instead of constantly returning to the Teach Pendant interface, operators can perform key actions using the Smart Panel. Alongside the Smart Panel, Gen 7 also introduces the TP7 Core Teach Pendant. It is more than 20% lighter than previous generations and features multiple grip positions, configurable buttons, a Full HD display, and a virtual joystick. The goal is to make programming and setup as intuitive and comfortable as possible, even during extended periods of operation.

More Computing Power in a More Compact Controller with PolyScope X

At the heart of the platform is the new CB7 Core Controller. It provides 40% more computing power while occupying 30% less volume than previous generations. The CB7 supports communication with PLCs, HMIs, MES platforms, industrial PCs, and machine vision systems. This is particularly important in modern production environments, where the cobot is part of a larger automation line rather than operating as a standalone device. The controller is available both as a standalone control box and in a version designed for integration into a shared control cabinet. All major Gen 7 components run on PolyScope X, the software platform powering the new generation. The platform also supports additional functionalities such as ProfiSafe, OPC UA, and logic programming, as well as applications from independent developers within the Universal Robots ecosystem. Therefore, Gen 7 builds on the established collaborative robotics model with enhanced connectivity and AI capabilities, while retaining one of the key advantages of Universal Robots cobots – ease of programming and integration.
